Are Talents and Treasures the Same Thing?

I was looking at the searches that were being done on the Lords Helpers web site and saw that someone had searched for: “are talents and treasures the same thing?” That seemed like a good topic for a Bible study and so this study was developed. I want to thank whoever it was that did that search for supplying the topic for this Bible study.

The answer to the question: are talents and treasures the same thing? is no. They are not the same thing. Talents are special skills that God gives us while we are here on earth. We use talents (or skills) to help bring others into His kingdom and into salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. We also help to ease the sufferings of others while on earth.

Treasures are what we accomplish when we lead others to Jesus – help others find salvation. Each one of those souls is a treasure, stored in the kingdom of heaven. It is a reward in a way. Don’t you feel an extra joy when you have been able to help someone find Jesus and to be saved?

You can read more about talents by reading the Bible study Are you hiding your talents?.

As far as treasures, Jesus tells us about saving up treasures here on earth versus our treasures in heaven.

Matthew 6:19-21  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

We are also to help fill needs when we see them. Maybe someone does not have enough food so we buy then some food. We use our talents (money) this time to purchase items to fill a need. God sees those acts and He lays those up in heaven for us as our treasures. It is a treasure whenever we are able to ease someone’s suffering a little here on earth.

So, a talent (or skill) is what you use on earth to reap a treasure (or reward) in heaven.

Hopefully, I have been able to explain this for you so that you can understand it a little better. I also hope that I have answered your question: are talents and treasures the same thing? If not, please email me (lpearson@lordshelpers.com) and I will try to define this better for you.

Until next time,

Are You Hiding Your Talents?

God gives each of us certain talents to use. He expects us to build up those talents he gives us. When we don’t use the talents he provides, they waste away and have disrespected God. Take a look at the story below. Jesus used this as an example to teach the people how important God-given talents are and should be to us.

Matthew 25:14-30

For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, “Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.” Continue reading
