A Child is Born

(This is my favorite Christmas story in the Bible. The birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, was quite an event even though he was born without a decent bed to lay down on. Can you imagine his mother’s feelings on that wonderful day? And what about Joseph, the earthly father God gave to protect him while on earth. What a great man he must have been.)

Luke 2:1-3  And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

Luke 2:4-5  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Luke 2:6-7  And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:8-9  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Luke 2:10-12  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:13-15  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Luke 2:16-18  And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Luke 2:19-20  But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Works of the Flesh Versus Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:19-21  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:22-25  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Guard Against Evil

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Our enemy is the devil. We are to always be watchful and guard against evil that will come against us. Stand fast in your faith – do not waiver – do not doubt that God is able to bring you through any tribulation, trial, or evil that may come against you. And do not ever think that you are the only one being attacked. Every Christian is fighting a battle against evil every day. Stand together, stand strong. Pray for each other. God will bring you through. Just believe!

Every Remembrance of You

Philippians 1:3-6  I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

These were Paul’s words to the Christians of Philippi. He was accompanied by Timothy (Philippians 1:1). I could not have expressed my feelings for my readers any better than these verses. As you read, think of this as me speaking directly to you, dear reader. I pray that these words will bring you comfort through times of trouble.

I like to especially remember verse 6, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ is able to keep you. God gave you to him and he took that gift seriously. He protects us with his very life. After all, he gave his life for us on the cross.

Be Prudent – Not Simple

Proverbs 14:15

The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

Many people will take at face value what anyone says about anything. God calls these people simple in this Proverbs verse. He says they believe whatever is told to them. That includes things about the Bible.

Did you know that God expects us to question things? He never expects us to take everything at face value. He expects us to question and dig in and find out the truth for ourselves. We should never take another person’s word for anything, especially with things about the Bible. This includes ministers – remember, they are human and can make mistakes too!

That includes me too. I am human and I can make mistakes. Never take anything I say as the truth until you search it out for yourself. Pray for God to reveal the truth to you. I am not perfect and neither is anyone else. We all make mistakes.

In this Proverbs verse God says that the prudent person will look well to his going. A prudent person is one who uses common sense and good judgment. It is always common sense to search out the truth for yourself. By doing that, you are looking well to your going.

Make a promise to yourself and God right now that from now on you will question and search out the truth for yourself. By staying in communication (prayer) with God, reading the Bible yourself, and studying on your own, you can keep sight of what is the real truth.

God’s Word Will Not Return Void

Isaiah 55:11

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

This is a special writing this morning. I was viewing the search phrases so I would know what people are looking for on this web site and noticed that someone wanted to know where to find the above verse. I hope this is helpful to you.

Isaiah 55:11 is one of my favorite verses because whenever I begin to feel like I am wasting time putting out God’s word for people to read and enjoy, he always reminds me of this verse. He tells me that my work is never in vain and that every posting will in some way help others.

Thank you, Lord, for this promise. It is wonderful to know that my efforts are helping others to come closer to you and to find the Lord Jesus Christ. May you lead and guide those who read the words you give me. May you always lead and guide me and protect me from leading others astray. – Amen.

Unless the LORD…

Psalm 127:1-2

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Unless the LORD has directed your labors, your work will not be successful. It is important to ask God for direction in everything we do. If you have been working on something where everything keeps going wrong on that project, maybe it is time that you ask God to show you the correct way to go. Without God in everything we fail. It is that plain and simple. God has to be in charge of all your projects. If not, you are heading down the wrong path and away from God.

Are you having problems sleeping lately? Are you getting up early and staying up late trying to figure out where to turn next on that project you have been working on? Ask God what he wants you to do. Stop draining your physical resources by staying up worrying about things. When God is in control of your projects, you will never have to worry. He will cause things to fall into place for you. Maybe it is time you scrapped that project and headed in the right direction…back towards God!

Remember, unless the LORD is directing your steps – there is NO success!

Are You Hiding Your Talents?

God gives each of us certain talents to use. He expects us to build up those talents he gives us. When we don’t use the talents he provides, they waste away and have disrespected God. Take a look at the story below. Jesus used this as an example to teach the people how important God-given talents are and should be to us.

Matthew 25:14-30

For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, “Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.” Read the rest of this entry »

Pouring Out of God’s Spirit

Acts 2:17

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

God tells us that a time will come when he will pour his Spirit out upon us. There will be prophecy by our sons and daughters. The young men will see visions and the older men will be sent dreams. What a wonderful time that will be. God will reveal himself further to all of us through these things.

We still have to be on guard and make sure that we are not falling into false prophecies and dreams. It is a serious thing with God and it should be for us too. Prophecy and dreams are not toys to play with. God uses them as his tools to communicate with us on a deeper level.

Be vigilant, be on guard. Keep your mind and heart pure and listen for God’s messages. Be prepared to accept his gifts as he gives them to you. If you are ever in doubt of a prophecy or a dream, ask God to reveal it to you again. He will. He always did that in the Bible. Read about those who received visions or dreams. God always gave it to them twice and most of the time three times to reinforce that the message was from him.

Be Careful False Visions

Jeremiah 14:14

Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

It is good to have a vision for your life – to have some idea of where you are headed whether in business or everyday life. We do have to stay alert though and test the spirits to know whether our visions are false.

If you get a vision, pray about it. Ask God to reveal to you whether this is a true vision sent from him, or is it a false vision. False visions will always lead you away from God. True visions will lead you closer to God.

There are many false prophets out there who say that they receive visions in God’s name and it is just not true. Never take one person’s word about such things. Always test the spirits. If you read the Bible, you will see that usually whenever God’s people received a vision, it was always reinforced by it being shown twice and sometimes three times.
